The Yuluwirri Painters, Australia

The Yuluwirri Painters have been functioning as a group for 3 years and have a very multicultural background. Art transposes all cultures – many of our members could not paint when they started and this community effort is a tribute to fifteen of them who have put the artwork together over the past three days. The artwork depicts cameos of life around lightning ridge set into the cracking mud of our waterholes as we wait for rain.
The members of the Yuluwirri art group have been invited to join in – This has its headquarters at Prestonpans Scotland. Our group assisted by some of the CDEP participants are planning and painting a community artwork that depicts a scene or item from Lightning Ridge that has meaning for them Community art participants – Wolly Graham , Karin Thurston, Monica Summers, Joan Bibby, Shaun Benauvick, Irene Kennedy, Flo Thomas, Leanne Wallace, Allan McCullough, Peter Stonnell, Christine Shelton, Beverly Jacobsen, Michelle Thompson, Helen Buchannan, Eva Kranz

JANUARY 16 2013

Colin McGuire is our special guest artist for January at the Jewel Miners Club Scottish evening in honour of our great Bard Robert (Rabbie) Burns.
McGuire: A thin 29 year old Glaswegian man, touch giddy in the head, sometimes poet of mangled form and dirty prose, sporadic drummer, drunk grammarian, waffler, painter using crayons, lover, hater, learner, teacher, pedestrian, provocateur, wanderer, confronter of shadows, irritating whine. He mines the dark regions of Scottish Culture and Psychology.

He has read widely in Scotland and England. Produced a collection of poetry and short stories – Riddle With Errors – and is currently writing another for release with Red Squirrel Press in late 2013. Find out more at:

ECHOES – 7.30 – 8.30 PM – THEN RAFFLE – COLIN MCGUIRE – 9.00 PM – THEN OPEN MIC 9.30 PM – 11.00 PM!

Passions are running high as a community group protest against the proposed closure of their school and stage a play to voice their concerns. The City of Edinburgh Council want to close Castlebrae High School in Craigmillar, saying it costs too much to run.

They started a consultation on the closure in October, saying it costs more than twice the city average to run the school. exam results are also well below the national average and just 21 pupils were enrolled in first year this term.

Local residents want it to stay open, saying it is a vital service used by local groups and provides adult education classes.

They have now written ECHOES, a play which voices their concern and frustration at the council’s proposals.

If the closure goes ahead, the school will shut next summer with pupils transferred to other nearby schools.
